Well-known as "the queen of the pop", Madonna Louise Ciccone was born on August 16th, 1958. She grew-up in Rochesters Michigan.
By the age of fifteen she started training as a dancer at the University of Michigan and with the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theatre in New-York city. Before singing with sire records, Madonna performed with a number of rock groups.
She was the first female artist to take full advantage of the music video, in fact, she collaborated with top designers, such as Jean-Paul Gaultier, photographers and directors. Gradually, she drew inspiration from underground club culture and the avant-garde to creat distinctive sexual and satirical images.
By 1991, Madonna had achieved 21 top ten hits in the United States and sold some 70 million albums, generating $1.2 billion in sales.
